Done with Dashboard - Back to Konfabulator

I just thought I'd add this little bit as a follow-up to my previous post about where I think Apple went wrong with widgets. I still think all the things I mentioned in that piece; however, after using Yahoo!'s free iteration of Konfabulator for close to a week now, I think I figured out where Apple really went w

Yahoo Inc. has acquired Konfabulator

Yahoo Inc. has acquired Konfabulator, a software maker that provides a computer platform for monitoring the weather, stock prices, and other customized information without opening a Web browser. The deal, finalized late last week for an undisclosed price, gives Yahoo access to a toolbox of mini-applications--known as widgets--which Konfabulator first introduced for Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh in 2002.

Dashboard 1 versus Konfabulator 2

John: "I installed Tiger with everything on it. I donÕt particularly like Dashboard, but then again, I donÕt particularly dislike it, either. I had a license of Konfabulator from earlier days and with Konfabulator 2 being released just a week ago, I thought it would be nice to see of the two environments live together."

Dashboard is a metaphor for what's right and wrong at Apple

David K. Every: "First, let me say Dashboard is cool, itÕs sexy, itÕs got neat transitions, and it is the number one selling feature of Tiger. I will use it, others will use it and I could never imagine something this cool coming out for Windows or one of the other UNIX, at least not first. Now that Apple has it, they'll rip off the idea, poorly. So this isn't a 'Bash Apple/Dashboard' article. However all those positives doesnÕt change whatÕs on the other side of this coin.

Widgets are wonders in little windows

Mike Wendland: "Widgets -- little self-contained programs that automatically open in a window whenever you want with updates and information like news headlines, weather reports and stock tickers -- are sweeping the Net. They typically appear as little text boxes or colored little notepads on your desktop whenever you call them up."

I'll be dashed

Dan Miller: "I was thinking about this because I realized the other day that, after an initial flurry of downloading and installing widgets, IÕm not using Dashboard at all."

Build a Dashboard Widget

Andrew Anderson: "Dashboard is a new environment that allows users to run mini-applications called widgets. These widgets, while able to use all of the advanced features of Tiger, are simple to use and simple to develop. This is the first in a series of two articles that gives an introduction to developing Dashboard widgets. This article will focus on the basics of widget development and then go over the steps required to develop a widget that displays *nix man pages."

Konfabulator Will Have Some Company

Reviewing the list of Tiger enhancements makes it fairly apparent that Konfabulator is not the only 3rd party application whoÕs functionality will be mimicked in the new version of OS X. Every piece of software (especially operating systems) ships with little holes in functionality that leave great niches for enterprising software developers to fill. As an operating system matures, the niches either stay filled by 3rd party products, or are integrated in subsequent updates. ItÕs a sore subject for the 3rd party innovators and the devout following their apps have accumulated.

Macworld readers were asked: "What Tiger feature are you looking forward to the most?" in an online poll. With 1,532 votes cast it emerged that more than a quarter (29 per cent) were most excited about Dashboard.

Konfabulator Triggers Screensaver Desktop

By: Jesse Shanks - March 5, 2003

I had this idea for a widget that started the screensaver as a desktop background and then flies around the screen. I made some pretty good progress, so I thought I would post it up here.
